That’s not transphobic, though. He’s making a point that because the LGBT agenda is “barreling forward at full-speed” that the B and T of LGBT is being left behind. Everyone is focusing on the L and the G that there are people who have no idea what the B and T even stand for. He’s not being transphobic or making a slight meant to make fun of or harm the bi and trans* community. He’s making a point that no one is focusing on them because they’re focusing on the lesbian and gay community.

People really need to realize that EVERYTHING Colbert says while on camera is satire.

Satire: The use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the cotext of a play, novel, fiilm or other works.

He is not making a transphobic joke. He is not honestly saying that bi and trans people do not count/matter/exist. He is making humor in order to shed light on the fact that they are forgotten.

He is doing this to raise fucking awareness that there is more to LGBT than LG. He is raising a big flag that says “Hey, don’t forget about these guys. They count. They matter. Why aren’t you doing anything about them? Why aren’t they discussed?” He is not trying to say “They don’t matter.”

So please stop with the self righteous, self pity, “social justice” comments unless you know what you are talking about.

Um I don’t mean to be rude but Stephen Colbert is pretty transphobic and no amount of mental gymnastics is going to change that.Satire really is only powerful as a tool of social justice when you’re satirizing those in power or oppressive stuff. Since he makes a ton of jokes using transgender people as a punchline he is kind of most definitely transphobic. Okay here’s the bigger problems with the line that goes “queer marriages aren’t as big of a threat/problem/whatever as Britney Spears or Kim Kardashian or whomever is in a scandalous celebrity marriage at the moment”.

First off, it’s always a woman or her actions that’s framed as the “threat” usually because it’s presented as her fault for entering into the marriage with ulterior motives. It’s a pretty classic case of policing not only female sexuality but that unique male-gaze-ish demand to know what’s in women’s heads lest “civilization” end.

Secondly, it reinforces rather than challenges the idea that queer relationships being recognized and socially supported is a “threat” to the nebulous and rarely actually defined concept of “marriage”. While most of the time that seems like a stand-in for just heteronormativity, because of the way heteronormativity presents itself as the only option for a lot of people that means the existence of family, the existence of kinship, and so on. So there’s also a lot of bog-standard heterosexism in statements like that too.

Finally, when you put it all together, it’s pretty damn clear about the message it (perhaps unintentionally) sends: if queer people are better about policing their sexuality than “bad” straight women, they will be tolerated in new “radical” ways. It pretty clearly pits queer people (who are frequently presumed to be men) against straight women, encouraging us to prove that the other is “undeserving”. I don’t know how much thought goes into this, but it’s quite an effective tool for dismantling a system of solidarity between queer people (especially queer men) and straight women.

Yup. If you feel like that fits, that’s definitely a label you can use. While I often identify as bisexual, queer also fits me so I sometimes use it to self-describe.
